What is all the fuss about?
People who have done a hypnobirthing course and used it for their babies’ births might feel they were let in on an amazing secret that few others benefit from. They are likely to have had very positive birth experiences – often relatively quick straightforward births with few or no drugs or complications and a quick recovery. This is great for both them and of course their babies. Although births do not always go to plan, where they do veer off course women and their partners tend to feel better equipped to deal with these unexpected turns.
I decided to train in hypnobirthing after being midwife to hypnobirthing couples and seeing how amazingly calm they were in labour. I then experienced the power of it first-hand for the birth of my son. This is when I decided I needed to set up Over the Moon Birthing – to spread the word!
A hypnobirthing course isn’t any old birth preparation course. Courses teach simple self-hypnosis and relaxation techniques to change your perception of birth, stop you being afraid of it and instead help you understand how your body is built to birth. It is only through being positive and remaining calm that we can keep our bodies relaxed, keep those fight-or-flight stress hormones at bay and enable levels of the ‘love hormone’ oxytocin (which cause our surges/contractions) to soar. This will give you the best possible labour.
Hypnobirthing courses from Over the Moon Birthing also look at how to create the best environment and atmosphere for birthing, whether this be at home or hospital, practical tips for what to take or have with you, birth positions, breathing and other relaxation techniques, roles for the birth partner and those first hours with your baby. Crucially, we also discuss our health system, empowering you to make the right decisions for you and your baby.
People opting to take hypnobirthing courses tend to be first-time parents or those who have had a tough time first time around and want their next birth to be different. Both group and one-to-one courses are available, depending on preference and timing. The next group course starts on the 25th July, held at Saints Café in Maidenhead and currently has a 20% discount offer. (see website for details)
So, if you have not yet booked your antenatal classes or are wanting to add a special something that WILL make a difference to probably the most special moment in your life, opt for hypnobirthing.
