This week, we are catching up with Holly who runs Sweaty Mama in Maidenhead, these classes are all about having fun an exercising with your little ones. Holly runs several sessions throughout the week and you can book on the classes via her Sweaty Mama website, there’s also a Facebook Group and you can follow Holly on Instagram @sweatymamamaidenhead.

So Holly, tell us about yourself

I have been married for just over 2 years to my husband James, we met in Vegas on a work trip 6 years ago. In April 2019 our little baby Finnley arrived and we couldn’t imagine our lives without him now.

When we found out we were expecting I started looking for ways to exercise when James was away on work trips. I knew I wouldn’t be able to get out for a run or go to the gym unless I could find a crèche for Finnley. They were all so expensive and I felt guilty leaving him to go and exercise.

What inspired you to start Sweaty Mama?

I realised there must be a lot of mamas in the same position as me who wanted to exercise but had no childcare and couldn’t afford the price tag of a crèche or felt the dreaded ‘mum guilt’ of leaving their little one to go to a gym class.

I knew I had to find a way to keep active, not just for the physical benefits but also for the mental benefits.

When I’ve had a bad day getting out for a run or going to a gym class always helps to lift my mood and make me feel better.

I started searching for fitness classes with babies. This is when I stumbled across an ad for Sweaty Mama. It was like nothing else I had ever seen before. It was fun, upbeat and the classes have a great sense of community.

My nearest Sweaty Mama class was around an hour away which was too far for me to travel. I loved the idea of it so much that I enquired about the franchise and the rest is history.

What can mums expect from your classes?

Mamas who come along to our classes can expect to feel welcomed into our Sweaty Mama family and form new friendships.

We don’t mind what your fitness level is, we have exercises suitable for all abilities. We are just pleased you have come along to join in with us.

We want you to have fun and enjoy our sessions. Sweaty Mama classes are relaxed and non judgemental. You can expect to build your fitness level gradually and at your own pace.

We are a friendly group of mamas keeping fit, supporting and empowering each other through this crazy journey called Motherhood.

Why is exercise so important for mums?

There are so many reasons why exercise is so important for us mamas. Exercise can help to boost energy levels. As mamas we will all have sleepless nights and wake up feeling like exercise is the last thing we want to do. Getting up and taking part in a Sweaty Mama class will give you an energy boost to get through the day and you’ll feel great for doing so.

Being a new mama is a tough job, it can be lonely sometimes as well. Exercising has been linked to reducing the risks of post natal depression. Our classes provide a support network and are a great place to meet new mama friends.

There are physical benefits of exercising too. As well as maintaining a healthy weight it is also important after birth to choose the right exercises to regain core and pelvic floor strength. Our instructors are pre and post natal trained and are there to give safe adaptations for those who need it.

We want every mama to have the chance to experience the mental and physical benefits of exercise through our sessions.

Is it good for mum’s and babies to exercise together?

Absolutely! Our classes are designed with baby in mind as well mama. All our cardio tracks are designed to be able to babywear if you wish to do so. Babywearing has been proven to help strengthen the bond between parent and baby.

Our floor tracks have fun moves such as the “press and kiss” which includes your little one and gives you extra motivation.

As a mama our little ones look up to us in every aspect of their lives. It’s great for them to see us exercising and leading a healthy lifestyle from a young age. By attending regular sessions and making exercise fun you are encouraging them to stay fit and healthy by making exercise part of their daily routine.

What would a class normally involve?

Sweaty Mama is a 45 minute session incorporating a warm up, a mixture of fun cardio tracks and some effective resistance & core strength tracks too. We do some floor work and interact throughout the session so that the children are entertained. We encourage new Mamas to come a little early to get settled and relax in the friendly environment.

What do you love most about running Sweaty Mama?

There are so many things that I love about running Sweaty Mama Maidenhead.

I love knowing that our sessions help local mums to feel less isolated by providing a community environment of like minded mamas.  I often get messages from mamas who attend our sessions to say how much more confident and happy they feel now that they are able to exercise again, that really puts a smile on my face.

It’s also fantastic to know that we are helping to teach the little ones how important it is to stay fit and healthy.

Where can people find out more about your classes and book?

I also have a Facebook page www.facebook.com/sweatymamamaidenhead where I post all the latest class information and competitions.

What exercise tips do you have for busy mums?

Little and often works best. It really doesn’t have to be a lot, even a gentle 15 minute walk with your little one in their pram is enough to boost your mood.

I like to fit in a couple of Sweaty Mama tracks at home whenever I get a spare 15 minutes. Once you’ve been to our classes and you know the moves you can practice at home with your little one.

Most importantly don’t beat yourself up if you don’t manage to fit any exercise into your day. You’ve probably done more than you realise running around after you’re little one anyway. So be kind to yourself and try again tomorrow.
